April 5, 2005 8:26 pm - N.O.W. Leadership - No Opportunity Wasted

Characteristic leadership means that no opportunities in ones life is ever wasted.

Isn’t it true that the longer you put off something that you’ve always planned on doing (or dreamt of doing) the chances of actually accomplishing that goal greatly diminish over time?

"No Opportunity Wasted is about learning how to live while you still have the chance; about letting go of the handrails; taking off your tie (and maybe taking off a lot more, while you're at it); and swerving off that predictable road you've been following for years -- onto a strange and bumpy path that just might, with a bit of luck, get you lost. It is about taking the time to enjoy experiences you've denied yourself. But it is also about sharing experiences with other people you know. And connecting with people you don't know . . . beginning with yourself."
- Phil Keoghan

April 12, 2005 6:59 am - Leadership For Kids: Blend But Don’t Bend

Coaching leadership for kids in a world full of peer pressure is never an easy task, but it can be accomplished.

Dr. Steven Richfield

Parents write: "We worry about our children's eagerness to follow the crowd rather than to stand up and lead. This has caused some serious problems at school and within the community. Can you offer some suggestions on how to raise young leaders?"

Developing leadership skills early on can make the difference between a child who thoughtlessly follows the arrogant will of the majority versus the trailblazer who obeys their own moral principles and sensible convictions.

Both types of children take markedly different paths in life; the former submerges aspects of their emerging identity while the latter flourishes with enhanced self-esteem and opportunity.

Much to parents' chagrin, kids who are followers tend to quickly cower in the face of peer pressure and risky temptation, and are often lacking in vital decision-making and self-assertion skills.

Leadership for kids comes more naturally to a few. Some children seem destined to become leaders due to their out-spoken and confident nature. Others require the capable coaching of alert and prepared parents.

April 24, 2005 3:55 pm - Leadership - The Importance of First Impressions

"A pebble at the fountain head may change the course of a river; so a first unfavorable impression has turned many a youth downward who would otherwise have gone upward."
- Orsion Swett Marden

In nine cases out of ten it can be assumed that the employer, and the world at large, will judge the qualifications of a worker by the effort he puts forth in making himself as presentable as possible.

Although to some this might appear unfair, or even hollow (to judge a person by his outward appearance), the fact remains that unless the worker is physically or mentally unable to spruce up - his qualifications are certain to become a secondary concern if the first impression is one of being shabby and unkempt.

Everything about a man or woman speaks to his/her character.

She puts her personality into everything she does. This is true for her grooming habits, no less than her work.

There certainly are exceptions, this is true.

Perhaps no one ever bothered to tell the young person entering business just how much depended on their always being neat and well groomed?

No doubt, the world in general will continue to judge a man's merits largely by his appearance, and the sooner young people learn this rule, the better it will be for them as they work to climb the leadership ladder.

"Diamonds in the rough may be quickly overlooked due to the shimmering of a lower value, simple piece of polished glass."
- Orsion Swett Marden

April 24, 2005 8:23 pm - Conversation - A Test of Leadership

In familiar conversation we often unconsciously reveal ourselves, and perhaps unveil certain weaknessess to others.

A smart employer will make a practice of inviting promising candidates for important positions to lunch or dinner in order to test them by their conversation.

When a new applicant is present in a formal interview environment, he is armed with well prepared answers. He is "on guard" and prepared for the intellectual battle that is before him.

It is less likely that the applicant will allow himself to "unbend" as he might if given the opportunity in a less formal setting.

There is no need to tell an experienced employer of what books you have read, with whom you have been in the habit of associating, or what your degree of culture is.

He can learn all these things and much more from your speech, body language and off the cuff remarks.

Every sentence that is uttered will ultimately support or betray its source.

Careless and thoughtless speech , vulgar or flippant comments, coarse or profane remarks can be a young persons undoing. The well educated and self-disciplined employer will not stand for it and will not welcome it into his organization.
