March 4, 2006 3:08 pm - What Motivates Employee?

Do rewards and incentive programs really work?

Research suggests that for the most part rewards do assist management in changing behavior in order to achieve positive results. BUT, the caveat to this is that it only works for the short term.

Over two dozen separate studies over the past three decades have each concluded that employees who expect a reward for doing their job do not perform as well as those who consider their job to be their reward. In other words, the latter group have a passion for what they do. They enjoy their work because they have a desire to be doing this kind of work, it genuinely interests them.

Employees who feel a sense of personal fulfillment in doing their work well, tend to require much less oversight and mangement than employees who simply need a regular paycheck.

Managers can create a greater sense of teamwork and loyalty by making sure to recognize employees for a job well done. This has a more lastly positive impact than simply paying a bonus or incentive.
