LEADERS IN PROFILE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW www.all-about-ferrets.com. What service or product does your business/website offer? Although I have a Cafe Press shop linked to my site, I don’t consider selling products to be the primary aim of my website. However I am working on improving the items for sale so that I'll be able to generate an income from quirky ferret items which other people might not have. It's basically a website about a passion of mine (ferrets), and all answers will be in that context. The service that I provide is to supply my readers with extensive information about pet ferrets and other members of their taxonomic family. My main aim is to provide information and advice on the care and welfare of ferrets and do it in an amusing and visually attractive way so that my message impacts on people’s memories.
What motivates you to remain focused on growing your business/website? When considering how to find your dream, it’s important to make “giving” a key part of any venture. Ferrets are high maintenance pets and too often I’ve heard heartbreaking stories of ferrets being killed or dying through the ignorance of their owners and every little thing I can do to change that will make my day! My aim is to provide a “one-stop shop” for ferret owners – a place where they can find out everything possible about ferrets and their close-knit cousins. My website door will remain open so that my readers feel comfortable to contact me if they need further advice or clarification on any key points. What has been your greatest challenge as a business leader, and how did you overcome it? My husband bought me the SiteBuild It! (SBI) tool as a present in February, 2005 and printed out the Action Guide for me to read. He said, “Honey, this is how to find your dream.” I did nothing with the material for quite while and when he asked, my excuse was that I needed to be shown what to do - rather than me simply reading the Guide to find out how to get started. Don’t do what I did next if you are truly wantd to learn how to find your dream. Every time he offered to show me the ropes, I made all kinds of excuses so that I wouldn’t have to do anything, as I was a total technophobe. He finally grabbed me by the shoulders two months down the track, made me sit in front of the computer, explained how it all worked and said rather forcefully, “For heaven’s sake, stop wasting your days. Sit at the computer and just DO IT!!!” That day was a total destiny-shaping day for me. My husband’s determination to help me get on with the task of self-growth turned out to be wonderful gift.
Describe the most important activity(ies) you do regularly, that you attribute to the success of your site? I’ve also learned how to upload my BLOG (web log) onto my site recently and find that to be a magical experience! I can write stories about things that happen to my ferrets or comment on ferret stories I’ve found around the world and quickly publish the information onto my site. The thrill is not because I want a reaction from anyone, but just because I found I was able to just write about what I feel strongly about online. This is just one additional tool you can utilize to help find your dream.
Do you own other internet businesses? If so, what product or service does it offer? Url?: If so, what product or service does it offer? Url? The URL is http://www.perfect-proofreading.com However I had nothing to do with the compilation of this particular site. It was all my husband’s work :-) What is your greatest accomplishment relating to your site? As a 58-year old that thought electric typewriters were the ultimate in technology, this journey has been mind blowing. And I confess that I get the biggest buzz from checking out my Traffic Stats section and finding, to my utter amazement, that visitors have been doubling every month, even though I don’t think I’ve done anything to my site to deserve that traffic. For me it’s the most wonderful thrill to know I’m reaching more and more people who are interested in ferrets as pets.
How would you recommend others get started on creating a website? But most importantly, read the action guide. Follow the instructions to a “T” and you’re bound to do well. Good grief, if I can do it, then anyone can learn how to find your dream and be successful online! Forget about perfection. Something imperfect, which is out there, has a chance of success. Something which is perfect and not out there, has no chance of success.
How do your define effective leadership? Effective Leadership -- To get a group of people to work together, often doing tasks they don’t want to do, to benefit or achieve some common goal/aim/destination.
Describe a favorite leadership tool for how to find your dream? No, I jest! I’ve always enjoyed “Think and Grow Rich” and “The One Minute Millionaire” made me sit up and think ... ‘what if!?’ Any last "Words of Wisdom"?
I love Erma Bombeck’s humor so I must quote her: Helen Keller is the other." The other quote comes from my long-suffering husband, without whose support and absolute encouragement, would mean that I’d still be typing this out on an electric typewriter :-)
Editors Note: Nona Langley represents a great example of how to find your dream, and one more real-life example of how one's passion for an idea can quickly become a successful online business. What's your passion? Perhaps my #1 leadership tip is for you to identify and follow your passion. That's exactly what I did after discovering Sitesell.com. - Richard Gorham, President of Leadership-Tools.com. ![]()
