Leadership Interview on

LEADERS IN PROFILE
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Introducing our leadership interview on MICHAEL BOYTER. Michael owns and operates FamilyHistoryProducts.com

What service or product does your business/website offer? FamilyHistoryProducts.com delivers e-books and software that make preserving family history easier, quicker and much more fun.

I like to refer to our products as "tools and toys" for family historians.

Our lead product - Memorygrabber, is a life story workbook. Many use it to tell their own life story. Others use our product to preserve the life story of an aging parent or grandparent.

Everyone has a story to tell, but many have no idea how to get started or what to write or say.

This is where my website comes in to assist. Our products help people preserve family memories. We make preserving your family history easy so that you and your family members will have a great time working through the process.

What motivates you to remain focused on growing your business/website?
It is a shame for someone to live their entire life – die, and leave absolutely no record or history of their life for their posterity.

Capturing our knowledge and life experiences for those we leave behind is an invaluable gift. Helping people accomplish this task is my greatest reward.

In addition to helping others, I am motivated to growing my business so that eventually it will afford me the opportunity of quitting my day job.

I have an independent streak in me that just can't stand the thought of working for someone else until I am 65 years old or more. Currently in my late thirties, I’m well on my way to realizing my goal of financial independence.

What has been your greatest challenge as a business leader, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge as of late, has been finding the time to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

Meeting the demands of a full-time job, web business and a family of 6 children - is to say the least, sometimes difficult.

The support of my wife is crucial, but in reality I need to realize that it is going to take some time to reach all of my business goals.

It is frustrating to create so many new ideas, yet have so little time to spend on getting them accomplished. Patience and realistic goal setting is key here. Unfortunately for me, patience has not been one of my strong points.

Describe the most important activity(ies) you do regularly, that you attribute to the success of your site?
My most important activity is keeping a business "journal" by my side when I work.

I use it to write my "to do" lists along with ideas that pop into my head, numerous login and passwords, and purchase confirmation information, etc.

My journal helps keep me organized. When I sit down to begin work I simply look back to see right where I left off the day before.

I always get much more work done when I keep my journal (a simple lined notebook) with me.

Do you own other internet businesses? If so, what product or service does it offer? Url?:
Not at this time, yet I do have plans for additional sites in the future.

What is your greatest accomplishment relating to your site?
I count these as some of the greatest accomplishments thus far:

1. Numerous e-mails from elderly individuals telling me that my site/products inspired them to finally begin preserving their life story so that they can pass it on to their children.
2. Having my Memorygrabber e-book used in the classroom at Duke University!
3. Creating a nice additional income stream for my family.
4. Knowing that eventually I will realize my dream of financial independence.

How would you recommend others get started on creating a website?
When you start, it is very important to start things out right.

I use SiteBuild-It (SBI) tools to run my online business. In my opinion, you shouldn't even consider starting an online business without SiteBuild-It.

SBI saves me countless hours of work and is directly responsible for the majority of my success.

In addition, it’s vital to the success of your business that you identify and focus on a niche market, rather than a larger, more general market. If you try to create the next Yahoo, your chances of success can be greatly diminished.

What advice would you offer to others wanting to generate income on the Internet?
Be patient, learn from those that are really successful and don't attempt to recreate the wheel.

When I first started, I really thought that a large gateway site like Yahoo was the way to go. If only I knew then what I know today.

After much wasted time and energy, I sought out the experts. I associated myself with pros, such as Ken Evoy, who taught me that a site with great content and a targeted/profitable niche market - was the key to MY success.

Describe your favorite leadership tool?
My role models are people such as Ken Evoy, Robert Kiyosaki and Armand Morin.

Ken is a genius and has taught me great lessons on over-delivering and so much more. A real class act.

Robert helps me to increase my knowledge of money.

Armand is a marketing genius. He keeps coming up with new business products that I didn't even know that I needed, but I soon find that I just can't do without.

Any last "Words of Wisdom"?
Stay dedicated and continually increase your knowledge of business generally, and online business specifically.

Have fun with it and do something you enjoy.

Editors Note: Michael Boyter represents one more real-life example of how one's passion for an idea can quickly become a successful online business. What's your passion? Perhaps my #1 leadership tip is for you to identify and follow your passion. That's exactly what I did after discovering Sitesell.com. - Richard Gorham, President of Leadership-Tools.com.
