What these time management exercises point out is how important it is that we clearly understand the true monetary worth of our time, so we can set better goals that pay higher dividends.

Time management exercises do this by giving you:

  • more achievement in the same number of hours
  • the same achievement in fewer hours

The second of our time management exercises provides a quick list of time-sucking activities that can assist you in avoiding the most common time management pitfalls.

Controling Time Wasting Activities

  • Close Your Door - Close your office door when you can’t be interupted.
  • Make Appointments With Yourself - Set aside blocks of time for important work and PLANNING.
  • Control Telephone Interruptions - Use voice-mail or have someone take messages. This allows you to focus on the work at hand; then you can return calls at your convenience or at a scheduled time that is communicated to the callers.
  • Minimize Meetings - Keep meetings to a minimum number and limit attendees to those needed. Use a detailed agenda and stick to your proposed time limit.
  • Reduce Paperwork - Keep memos short. Handle each piece of paper only once. Cut out unnecessary paper.
  • Assertiveness - Give instructions with confidence, which implies that you expect them to be followed. Taking more of a no-nonsense approach will limit the amount of drama, silliness and unprofessionalism in your workspace.
  • Modify Your Behavior - Identify your behavior goal. Make a commitment to develop the new behavior. Plan small actions to demonstrate the new behavior. Choose rewards and punishments for reinforcement. Check your progress regularly and make adjustments as needed.

Another key point of our time management exercises is to gain leverage on yourself by telling others what you are committed to doing. Making a public statement to friends and families will assist you in staying true to your goal.

We hope you’ve enjoyed these proven time management exercises. So stop wasting time – apply these new tools and watch the time fly as you achieve more than ever before.
