Effective leaders typically hold great expectations for themselves, as well as their staff.
They realize that most people want to do a good job; they want to please their supervisor and to do a good job for the company. As a result, their instinct will be to meet and/or exceed the level of expectations that are set for them.
Great leaders ask for a lot; they expect a lot, and most importantly – they GIVE a lot back to the people they lead.
The enlightened leader will set the bar high to encourage his or her people to reach higher; push harder, and achieve new levels of productivity.
It is a proven fact that the habit of expecting greater things from ourselves (always pushing, prodding, testing our limits), calls out the very best that is within us.
The wise leader will always maintain a
positive, encouraging and supportive tone – while at the same time communicating aggressive goals and objectives.
A balanced message must be leveraged when setting great expectations. A leader must remain supportive, even when sending a very firm message.
Leaders understand that a message of hope, belief and optimism almost always outweighs a message of fear, worry and insecurity.
There is a tremendous power in the habit of anticipating good things; of believing that we shall realize our ambitions, goals or objectives; in knowing in our heart that our dreams will come true.
As a leader of other men and women, it is your responsibility to maintain a positive message in public; in staff meetings – anytime more than one employee is present. Counseling can certainly be done in private, but never in public.
Too often, great expectations are sabotaged from the very beginning by negative thoughts, worries and fears. If the mood of
the team is tainted with an unhealthy anticipation of bad things to come; expectations that the goals are unachievable – then the team is unlikely to produce any great results.
Great leaders are careful to anticipate such worries and fears in advance.
These leaders make certain that each member of the team is committed to the task at hand. They infuse Hope and Confidence into the hearts and minds of their team members.
They send a clear message to each member of their team that:
I believe in you, and I can see something in you
that you may not yet see in yourself.
There is only one thing more inspiring than knowing that our supervisor; our teachers; our parents; our relatives and friends – believe in us and hold great expectations for us.
That “one great thing” is when we hold those same greater expectations for ourselves.
