These team building quotes are for leaders who want a team that works well together, whether that's a branch staff learning to cover for each other or a project team pulled together from three departments.
A good quote gives your people a clearer picture of the message you're trying to convey, and it helps the team agree on how they want to work together going forward.
A team building quote works best when the leader connects it to something the team is working on now. Read the quote at the start of a team meeting, name the situation it fits, then ask the team one question about what they'd like to do differently.
The quotes about team building below are grouped by the situation you're in, from leadership and teamwork to the short phrases that fit on a slide. Each card has a Copy quote button, so you can paste a quote and the name straight into a slide or an email.
A team leader sets the standard for how the team works together, from how responsibilities are shared to how the strongest performers are recognized. These quotes about leadership and teamwork help the leader make that standard clear to the team. A few places they work include:
A new leader's first meeting with the team.
A team with one or two standout performers who tend to work alone.
Two groups merged into one team after a reorganization.
A team setting its goals for the coming year.
“
"Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare."
Patrick Lencioni
Author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
"The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."
Attributed to Phil Jackson
Hall of Fame basketball coach
"Individual commitment to a group effort, that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."
Attributed to Vince Lombardi
Hall of Fame football coach
"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results."
Attributed to Andrew Carnegie

"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
Attributed to Babe Ruth
Hall of Fame baseball player
Lencioni's line fits the new leader's first meeting, because it tells the team on day one that how they work together will matter as much as the results. Babe Ruth's quote works for the team with standout performers who tend to work alone, when the leader wants them to see how the whole team's results depend on them.
Communication Quotes for Teams
Many teamwork problems trace back to lack of communication, like a handoff that missed a detail or a change one shift heard about and the next one didn't. The leader sets the example for how information moves across the team, and these communication quotes for teams help start that conversation. A few places they work include:
A handoff between shifts that keeps missing details.
A team that hears about changes from customers before they hear about them from you.
A meeting where the same two people do all the talking.
A new process that each person has started doing a little differently.
“
"The great enemy of communication, we find, is the illusion of it."
William H. Whyte
Journalist and author of The Organization Man
"The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them."
Attributed to Ralph G. Nichols
Researcher who studied listening
"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply."
Stephen R. Covey
Author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
"You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can't get them across, your ideas won't get you anywhere."
Attributed to Lee Iacocca
Former chairman of Chrysler
"Information is giving out; communication is getting through."
Attributed to Sydney J. Harris
Newspaper columnist
Whyte's line fits the handoff between shifts, because it reminds the team to confirm the next shift understood the details of the update. Ralph Nichols's quote about the need to be understood works for the meeting where the same two people do all the talking, when the leader wants to hear from the rest of the team. For an activity to go with these quotes, Lost in Translation in the free Team Building Activities Guide shows a team how easily a message changes as it's passed along.
Teamwork Quotes for Team Meetings
A team meeting is the one place the whole team hears the same message at the same time, and a teamwork quote at the start gives the leader a simple way to set the focus for the meeting. These teamwork quotes work well in moments like these:
The weekly team meeting before a busy stretch.
A meeting to plan coverage for vacations and time off.
The kickoff for a project that needs help from every person on the team.
A quarterly review where the team looks at its results together.
“
"Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success."
Attributed to Henry Ford
Founder of Ford Motor Company
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."
Attributed to Helen Keller
Author and activist
"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it."
Attributed to H.E. Luccock
Professor and minister
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships."
Attributed to Michael Jordan
Hall of Fame basketball player
"Unity is strength. When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved."
Attributed to Mattie Stepanek
Poet and peace advocate
Henry Ford's line fits the project kickoff, because it gives the leader a way to say the hard part comes after the first meeting and people start getting into doing the work. Luccock's quote works for the meeting to plan vacation coverage, since it reminds the team that every person's part matters when someone is out.
Quotes About Working Together and Collaboration
Cooperation is doing your part when you're asked, and collaboration is when people choose to share their best ideas because they want the team to succeed. The leader builds collaboration by asking for ideas and giving credit to the people who offer them. These quotes about working together fit times like these:
Two departments that need to share a process for the first time.
A problem no single person on the team can solve alone.
A team member who keeps a better method to themselves.
A brainstorming session for next year's plan.
“
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
African proverb
Traditional saying
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Attributed to Margaret Mead
Cultural anthropologist
"None of us is as smart as all of us."
Attributed to Ken Blanchard
Co-author of The One Minute Manager
"A group becomes a team when each member is sure enough of himself and his contribution to praise the skill of the others."
Attributed to Norman Shidle
Author and editor
"No matter how brilliant your mind or strategy, if you're playing a solo game, you'll always lose out to a team."
Attributed to Reid Hoffman
Co-founder of LinkedIn
The proverb fits the two departments sharing a process, because it gives the leader a way to explain why the slower start is worth it. Ken Blanchard's quote works for the brainstorming session, when the leader wants everyone's best ideas on the table before the team picks a plan.
Positive Team Building Quotes and Phrases
A short, positive phrase can become something the team says to each other, like a line on the whiteboard during a busy month or the slogan for a team event. These team building phrases are short enough to remember, and they work well in moments like these:
The title slide for a team meeting or an offsite.
A team slogan or banner for a team building event.
A whiteboard in the team's work area during a busy month.
A thank-you note to a team that covered for each other.
“
"Teamwork makes the dream work."
John C. Maxwell
Title of his 2002 book
"Together everyone achieves more."
T.E.A.M. acronym
Traditional team saying
"Wearing the same shirts doesn't make a team."

"The ratio of we's to I's is the best indicator of the development of a team."
Attributed to Lewis B. Ergen

"Many hands make light work."
English proverb
Traditional saying
Maxwell's book title fits the slogan for a team event, because it's short and the whole team already knows it. If you'd like the team to write its own slogan, the Team Battle Cry activity in the free Team Building Activities Guide walks the team through it.
How to Use a Team Building Quote with Your Team
Team building quotes are received best when the leader ties the quote to one problem the team can see, then asks the people closest to the work how to fix it.
TOM'S SHIFT HANDOFF MEETING
Tom leads a twenty-person loan servicing team split across a day shift and an evening shift. Nine customer escalations a month were coming from details dropped at the shift change. At a joint team meeting he read William H. Whyte's line about the illusion of communication and asked one question: what does the next shift need from you that it isn't getting?
The team built a five-line handoff note in the shared work queue, covering open promises to customers, files waiting on documents and anything that changed during the shift. Each shift lead reads the note aloud at the start of the next shift.
Two months later, escalations from missed handoffs were down to two a month, and the evening shift had added a sixth line of its own.
Tom used the quote to name the problem, then let the two shifts design the fix together. When the team builds the solution, they're more likely to keep using it after the meeting.

What are good team building quotes for work?
Good ones fit the moment your team is in. Patrick Lencioni's line that teamwork "remains the ultimate competitive advantage" works when a leader is building a new team, and William H. Whyte's "The great enemy of communication, we find, is the illusion of it" fits a conversation about a missed handoff.
What are some quotes about leadership and teamwork?
The line credited to Babe Ruth says a club full of stars "won't be worth a dime" if they don't play together, and Phil Jackson is credited with "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team." Both help a leader talk about the team's results and each person's part in them.
What are good communication quotes for teams?
Stephen Covey wrote in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1989) that most people "listen with the intent to reply." The line credited to Sydney J. Harris separates information, which is giving out, from communication, which is getting through.
What are some quotes about winning as a team?
Michael Jordan is credited with "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." For more quotes to use after a big result, the achievement quotes have a section on celebrating a team win.
What does "Attributed to" mean on these quotes?
It means the quote is widely credited to that person, but there's no dated source behind it, like a book or an interview. Every quote without it traces back to a source you can cite.
Who said "Teamwork makes the dream work"?
It's best known as the title of John C. Maxwell's 2002 book, Teamwork Makes the Dream Work. The phrase was already in use as a team slogan before the book came out, and it works well on a slide or a team banner.
Richard Gorham has led teams in financial services for more than 30 years, from retail branches and operations to investments and insurance, and he still leads a team today.
